Design and Technology

“Design is not just what something looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." Steve Jobs.

At Ash Croft Primary Academy, the study of Design and Technology allows our children to be innovators, creating products linked to a wide range of topics and disciplines.

Starting our journey in EYFS, pupils learn the prerequisite skills for DT through exploration of materials, in order to develop their own ideas about how to use them and what to make.  Essential skills are taught in how to use a range of tools to join materials which allows children to thrive as they reach KS1 and the National Curriculum.

During KS1 and KS2, pupils develop important skills and knowledge in cooking and nutrition, textiles and both mechanical and electrical systems.

Through exciting and imagination-capturing lessons, pupils work to fulfil a design brief. Working hard to produce functional, user centric products that meet a need and purpose.

Pupils at Ash Croft Academy delight in experiencing the design process. They use research to discover existing products, working collaboratively to identify areas of development. Then they generate designs and visually communicate their own ideas, before practicing skills and creating prototypes. Pupils gain a vast knowledge of design and manufacturing and understand the importance of evaluating their products and adapting their designs to make improvements.

By the end of KS2, pupils will leave Ash Croft as innovative, confident and functional designers, with the practical skills to equip them to face an evolving technological world.

Through all of these, our children are able to become ACE designers
