EYFS

Play leads to brain plasticity, adaptability and creativity.  Nothing fires up the brain like play.” Stuart Brown, M.D.

“Play is the highest form of research.” Albert Einstein

In the Early Years Foundation Unit (EYFS) at Ash Croft Primary Academy we offer a curriculum rich in awe and wonder.  We want children to be happy confident, well-rounded individuals with a love for learning.  We believe in providing all children with a safe and stimulating environment that provides exciting opportunities, promotes independence, challenge, exploration, and adventure!

We care deeply about the children in our school and form warm and positive relationships with pupils and families. It is our intent that all children develop physically, verbally, cognitively and emotionally in an enabling environment which values all cultures, communities and people. We aim for our children to be confident and resilient, to believe in themselves and interact positively with others.

Children in EYFS may be the youngest children in school but they are always very busy discovering, learning, playing and exploring in our fantastic classroom. In Bears and Cubs, children are encouraged to become motivated learners by engaging with other children and the environment around them.

We provide a learning environment which is both indoors and outdoors, allowing the children to participate in a variety of opportunities.

Indoors there are many zones to support our learning.  Bears and Cubs love to read a book, retell a favourite story or put on a puppet show in our cosy reading corner.  Children practise and refine their fine motor skills in the writing area.  We have a wealth of building blocks where children learn how to create wonderful representations found in the real and imaginary world.  Our art area allows children’s creative juices to flow where we they have the choice of a variety of media to create 2D and 3D art or models.

Heading outdoors, we have a massive outdoor sand pit and a water area to provide a sensory learning experience along with a maths area to explore counting, shapes and measure. Gardening is one of our favourite past times, providing life-long skills in sustainability and enjoying a tasty home grown treat along the way.  Creating mud pies and cakes in our mud kitchen is a popular area for all our budding chefs along with a welcoming home-corner where we role play everyday family stories. Our construction areas provide creativity and gross motor development where we build anything from cars, to castles, to obstacle course with crates, tyres and planks.

Exploring under rocks and logs is where children find the best mini-beasts and learn to look after living things. Dancing and singing can be enjoyed on our stage where our children love to express themselves.

We have many more exciting areas which develop and grow as the children do. Being able to choose between the different activities provided by adults or by choosing their own resources to follow their own interests ensures that we celebrate each child’s unique ideas.
